Olympic dividend newsletter   volume 03     June 5th 2016

Introduction

You will have received previous correspondence with regard to the ‘Olympic Dividend’. I plan to present a simple weekly newsletter that will aim to share as much information as possible with interested persons. You can then use that information to advise your club members via the various electronic vehicles that you use. I look forward to the club representatives passing on information to me so that I can share it.

The Irish team

The IHA funding to take part in the Olympics is about €225K short of the required amount. The Association is endeavouring to bridge that gap through a number of initiatives.  To date over €165,000 has been donated. See www.hockey.ie for details.

The LHA action to achieve a dividend from Olympic participation

The LHA are suggesting two sets of actions as follows: -

  • We are proposing that as many clubs as possible might organise a regular weekly hour of hockey from the start of June through the Olympic games in August.
  • On the one of the days that Ireland are playing at the Olympics that a club organise an event in association with the game. This would culminate with people congregating to watch the game on a big screen in a club house or other venue.

Action around the clubs

Genesis -  are running summer hockey on Tuesday evenings at St. Raphaela’s in Stillorgan until July 19th from 7.15 till 9.15   Jantien advises that all are welcome. The charge is €30 for eight sessions. Its mixed hockey and open to non members.

Portrane - Anita Patterson and Henneke van Strik advise that they will host mixed hockey on Wednesday evenings between 8 and 9 pm in Donabate.  Anyone from over 13 and up to 75 years is welcome. Cost €5 for adult and €3 for students. Portrane also plan a youth camp (6 to 15 years) from 2nd to 4th August. And there is a ‘try hockey day’ open to everyone on Saturday 6th August as part of the parish festival.

Bray - Sinead and Ross advise that hockey at Loreto Bray is on Tuesdays at 8pm for adults and at 7pm for teens. The charge is €5 for adults and €2 for the teens. Bray plan a FUN tournament on 23rd July.

St Brendan’s Phoenix Park - Izzy Veld reports that planning is well advanced for summer hockey action at the National Sports Complex.

Three Rock Rovers - President John Findlater reports that TRR kicked off their summer programme of hockey with a veteran’s festival of hockey last weekend. They had over 150 participants.

 The GAMES

The Olympic programme of games is now available. Ireland’s first game is on Saturday 6th August at 15.00. We are suggesting that clubs / members might arrange a get together in association with the matches. Bray have arranged that the games will be shown on the big screen in the Martello (the clubs usual gathering place). Other clubs please let us know of any similar arrangements.
