LHA Policy on the Use of Video Equipment and Images for Training Purposes
To clarify the use of video and photographic equipment during hockey training and matches—particularly at U18 club and schools level—the Welfare Committee of the Irish Hockey Association (IHA) has recommended the following policy, which has been approved by the IHA Board:
The IHA recognises the value of video and photography as legitimate coaching tools and has approved their use at all games under the jurisdiction of the IHA and its affiliated organisations. Players participating in these competitions are deemed to have given permission for their images to be used for coaching purposes and for the promotion of hockey, without payment or compensation. This policy will be clearly communicated to players and their parents/guardians.
It is the responsibility of the IHA and its affiliated organisations to ensure that any images used for coaching or promotional purposes are handled appropriately. Please note: video footage should not be taken of children under the age of 12 for training purposes.
What does this mean in practice?
• Videoing matches is permitted at all club and school games involving players aged 12 and above, as long as it is used for legitimate coaching purposes.
• Parental consent must be obtained by clubs and schools when using video for training. Parents should be informed in advance.
• If a parent raises concerns, the club or school should engage directly with them to address the issue. A refusal to consent may highlight an underlying concern that should be followed up appropriately.
• Clubs or schools cannot prohibit the opposition from recording matches for coaching purposes.
• Each club or school must establish a clear policy for the use and secure storage of video footage. Material should be used only for coaching and never shared on public platforms. Risk assessments should be conducted to prevent inappropriate use.
• For promotional use, images must not identify or name the child. Any inappropriate use of images should be reported to the organisation’s Children’s Officer or Designated Liaison Person, especially if there are concerns about child protection.
For further guidance, clubs and schools should refer to the Good Practice Guidelines on the use of video and photography, as outlined in the IHA Code of Ethics for Hockey for Young People. You can view these guidelines by clicking here.
