How to Get Prepared for Applying for the Sports Capital Grant

How to Get Prepared for Applying for the Sports Capital Grant

November 11, 2025

The Sports Capital Grant is the main source of government funding for developing sports and physical recreation facilities, as well as for purchasing non-personal sports equipment across Ireland.

For Leinster Hockey — and indeed for clubs across all sports — it offers a fantastic opportunity to secure funding that can help improve facilities, equipment, and overall club development.

The last round of applications took place in 2023, and with strong indications that a new Sports Capital Grant Funding Scheme will open in 2026, now is the ideal time for clubs to start preparing in advance.

About the Sports Capital Grant

The objectives of the Sports Capital Grant are to:

  • Support voluntary and community organisations, national governing bodies (NGBs), local authorities, Education and Training Boards, and schools in developing high-quality, accessible, safe, and sustainable sports facilities.
  • Prioritise the needs of disadvantaged areas and groups (including people with disabilities).
  • Encourage the sharing of facilities between clubs, community groups, and governing bodies to maximise participation and community benefit.

Applying Through the Online System (OSCAR)

All applications for the Sports Capital Programme must be made through the Online Sports Capital Register (OSCAR) system.

Through OSCAR, organisations can:

  • Submit grant applications
  • View previous grants and payments
  • Update contact details
  • Request grant payments
  • Communicate directly with the Department

Before applying, every organisation must register on OSCAR.
You can find full details in the Sports Capital and Equipment Programme – Guide to Registration.

If you’re unsure whether your organisation is already registered, you can check the list of all registered organisations on the OSCAR website.

Making an Application

When it’s time to apply, clubs can access a step-by-step video tutorial and PDF guide on the official Sports Capital website. These resources explain the full process and are highly recommended for any club considering an application.

The Sports Capital Grant is a competitive process, so preparing early is key. We encourage all Leinster clubs to familiarise themselves with the application requirements and start gathering the necessary information now to be ready when applications open.

Next Steps

Leinster Hockey will continue to share updates and helpful information over the coming weeks to help clubs prepare for the next round of applications — including guidance on timelines, key documents, and useful tips for putting together a strong submission.
