National Umpiring Course for Beginners & Club Umpires
November 14, 2018
The Irish Hockey Umpires Association (IHUA) will be holding two National Award Courses in Leinster on 02nd December in Kilkenny and 09th December in Pembroke Wanderers HC.
Both courses will be run by highly experienced and qualified umpires, including International Umpires. The course will have a number of videos taken from local hockey matches.
On completion of the Rules Test on the day of the course, the National Umpires Award is gained by participants.
This exciting new umpire course will ensure that all participants have the opportunity to gain a nationally recognised umpire qualification. The course will consist of 2 mandatory parts: the Rules course and the Umpiring course.
The National Rules Course will require the participants to have a good knowledge of the rules prior to attending the course. Tutors will then take the participants through a number of important rules to ensure a better understanding of their interpretation . This aspect of the course culminates with a short 35 minute rules test featuring multiple choice and scenario based questions.
The National Umpiring Course takes the participants through the more practical side of umpiring using video examples from the local game. Participants are taught the basic fundamentals of umpiring including specific guidance, decision - making, the safety and management of players and managing a game of hockey , to improve confidence and performance at all levels. The course is recommended for persons 18 years and above but the IHUA generally accommodate persons aged 16 and 17 years old, should they have a strong desire to attend the course.
