LHA Inter-Pro & Development (Girls) Update May 17

LHA Inter-Pro & Development (Girls) Update May 17

May 04, 2017

May 2017

The 2017 Inter-provincial development programme for girls in the Leinster region is well underway at this point. Many thanks to co-ordinators Leah Spillane (Leinster girls) and Alex Doyle-Weston (Leinster South East Girls).

Mick McKinnon has developed a series of assessment sessions which were used in pilot mode in the centres and were a valuable aide for the coaches. Mick has also prepared the development sessions for all the 1st and 2nd year sessions.

An open coach education seminar was held in Kilkenny College on 23-Apr which was attended by 24 coaches involved in the development of players on inter-provincial panels and in clubs/schools.

Under 16 Player Development:

Leinster South East: South East development sessions are near completion and the girls are preparing for a series of challenge games against Munster development panels, following which a group will be selected to participate in further development over the summer prior to the final U16 trials at the end of August

Leinster 1st Years: Assessment & Development

All players have now been assessed and have been assigned to a development centre where they are focusing on core skills.  They will finish out with a festival style blitz.  Players to continue into the 2018 programme will be identified and will be called back for development next Autumn.

Leinster U16s:  (Born 2002/2003)

Players from the 2016 development programme plus additional players nominated by clubs and schools have all been assessed and attended development sessions in 3 different centres.

A panel of 50 have been selected to play a series of challenge games against the Munster development panels on Sunday 13th May in Three Rock.  This panel will be subdivided into 4 teams.  These are ‘challenge’ games which will test the players and give them a better sense of the standard that they are striving to achieve.

Following the challenge games

  • A panel of circa 30 players will be selected to prepare for the 2017 inter-provincial tournament next October. This panel will attend final trials at the end of August.
  • Selected players who will still be eligible for U16 inter-pros in 2018 will be nominated to join the 2017-2018 development programme next Autumn (e.g. they will join with the players selected from the 1st year programme)

Under 18s: (Born 2000/2001)

Leinster South East:

South East development is underway with trials being held over the coming weeks. Players selected for the SE panel will attend development over the summer before the final trials at the end of August.

Leinster U17s

A squad was selected from players in the development panel to participate in the HOD International tournament in Eindhoven.  This is the 3rd year that Leinster have participated in the tournament and it has proven to be an excellent learning opportunity for players. The team played against some of the best players in Europe with the National panels from Belgium and Poland and top clubs and district teams from Holland, Germany and England.  While disappointed in their final position (9th) and losing three games on the final hooter was particularly disappointing.  However the management team were very pleased with the overall development and progression.  Thanks to John Pearson and Leah Spillane who looked after the girls.

Leinster U18s

Players who have been involved previously in LHA development programmes have been invited to participate in assessment sessions this week and next.  There are approximately 70 girls to be reviewed, including those players on national U16 & U18 panels. Following the assessments some players may be invited to participate in a short development cycle alongside members of the current Under 18 development panel during May and will then be called back to attend further development in August prior to the final trials.

Leinster hockey have a large number of very talented players in this age group and over 20 are currently involved in Irish U16 & U18 national and regional development panels.

  • Those players on the national panels will be invited to an assessment session (to help core panel data) but will not be participating in the development programme until they have been released by Ireland and have completed the appropriate rest/recovery period
  • Players selected on the final Irish teams to participate in the 6 nations tournaments in Barcelona in July will join the development panel players for the final trials at the end of August

Note: There will be a separate assessment for players born 2000/2001 who are not listed below and wish to be considered for a development panel.  Clubs/Schools should ask the players to register online by Monday evening (8th May). There will be a €20 fee for the assessment, which is provisionally scheduled for Wednesday 17th May, time/venue tbc
