Introduction

We present a simple weekly newsletter that will aim to share as much information as possible with interested persons.

Over 100 million TV viewers for Ireland’s first game

The first game for Ireland in the Olympics is with India. They were beaten in the Champions trophy final by OZ last Friday. It was their first world hockey final in over thirty years. There was huge interest on the sub-continent. By the way a question for you; what country has won the most Olympic hockey gold? No not Oz, not Holland, not Germany, not GB.

The Irish team

The IHA funding to take part in the Olympics is about €225K short of the required amount.  Less than €50K needs to be collected. See www.hockey.ie for details.

The LHA action to achieve a dividend from Olympic participation

The LHA are suggesting two sets of actions as follows: -

  • We are proposing that as many clubs as possible might organise a regular weekly hour of hockey from June through the Olympic games in August.
  • On the one of the days that Ireland are playing at the Olympics that a club organise an event in association with the game. This would culminate with people congregating to watch the game on a big screen in a club house or other venue.

Action around the clubs

Zarina says that Monday nights at ALSAA is where the action is; students are on from 6.30 to 7.30 and mixed hockey for adults from 7.30 for one hour; Its €5 for adults and €3 for students. The Olympic programme of games is now available. Ireland’s first game is on Saturday 6th August at 15.00. We are suggesting that clubs / members might arrange a get together in association with the matches. Bray has arranged that all the games will be shown on the big screen in the Martello (the clubs usual gathering place). Other clubs please let us know of any similar arrangements. St James Gate / Guinness are planning a big day on Saturday 6th August to coincide with the India game.
