U14 Indoor Tournament: Shield Success for Muckross and Portrane

The U14 Shield Competitions took place on Sunday, January 18th, as boys’ and girls’ teams from across Leinster (and Galway) travelled to Portrane for the second time to compete for Shield honours. With 45 matches played across an action-packed day, the Girls Shield was claimed by Muckross, while the Boys Shield went to Portrane on home soil.
Girls Shield Competition
The Girls competition kicked off the day, with eventual finalists Bray and Muckross playing out a 2–2 draw in the opening game. Meanwhile, Boyne narrowly defeated Portrane in a tight 1–0 contest, Corinthians overcame YMCA, and Three Rock Rovers were edged out by Monkstown.
The competition remained extremely competitive throughout, with closely fought matches across all teams. With the top two teams advancing to the final, Muckross produced standout performances, including a crucial win over Monkstown and a 5–0 victory in their final group game to secure top spot.
Bray and Boyne went into their final matches needing wins to qualify. Boyne defeated Three Rock Rovers 3–1, leaving Bray with the challenge of beating Portrane — which they did convincingly, 3–0, booking their place in the final.
The final saw Muckross face Bray in a thrilling encounter. In a tight contest, Muckross found the clinical edge to win 2–1 and claim the Girls Shield! Congratulations to Muckross and all teams for a fantastic display of hockey.

Boys Shield Competition
The Boys Shield kicked off later in the day with six teams competing. Defending champions Boyne opened with a 2–0 win over Galway outfit Tribes, while Bray and hosts Portrane recorded convincing wins over Avoca 2 and North Kildare, respectively.
Portrane and Boyne continued their strong form throughout the group stages. Portrane won four matches and drew one, securing top spot in the group, while Boyne won three of their first four games, booking their place in the final early. In their final group game, North Kildare delivered a brilliant 4–1 win over Boyne, confirming the Boys Shield final: Portrane vs Boyne.
In the final, Portrane stepped up their performance and turned on the style, defeating Boyne 3–0 to be crowned Boys Shield Champions. Congratulations to Portrane and all participating teams for a fantastic competition.
