Club Spotlight: Skerries HC – A Strong 2025 On and Off The Pitch
December 18, 2025
In this week’s Club Spotlight, we’re highlighting some of the fantastic work taking place at another growing club within the Leinster Hockey community — Skerries Hockey Club. From impressive fundraising initiatives to a memorable international trip for their Inters squad, the club has been busy creating opportunities both on and off the pitch.
Skerries Hockey Club has been a home for hockey in north County Dublin since its founding in 1968. The club has always taken pride in being rooted in the local community, providing a welcoming place for anyone who wishes to play — regardless of age or ability.
Inters Trip Abroad
This season, a group of 27 Inters players embarked on a memorable trip to Germany and the Netherlands. Before departing, the group held a series of creative fundraising events, supported by over 400 club members and the wider Skerries community. Activities included a Spinathon outside a local election polling station, family quiz nights, a tuck shop during Water Safety Week, and a brilliant mental health talk delivered by leading sports psychologist, Dr. Olivia Hurley.
Once overseas, the group spent three fantastic days exploring Hamburg, enjoying activities, road trips and the hospitality of their hosts — all mixed in with some exciting hockey. The stunning grounds of Grossflottbeker HC welcomed the players for the opening stages of the trip, providing coaching, facilities, and U16 challenge matches. These fixtures were rounded off with a shared meal in their beautiful clubhouse.
From there, the girls travelled across the border to the Netherlands for a high-level training session with one of the country’s top underage national coaches at GHBS Hockey Club. The group then faced two highly competitive GHBS U16 sides, followed by post-match meals and time spent socialising with their Dutch counterparts.
The trip was a huge success and a wonderful experience for the players — showcasing the power of sport in creating friendships, community and memories that will last long after the final whistle.

The Boys Are Back in Town
Thanks to the success of Social Hockey, Skerries were able to reintroduce a Men’s 2nds side this season — a blend of teenage boys and older players, many of whom only picked up a stick in the last 18 months. As a knock-on effect, the boys’ section has also continued to grow, allowing the club to enter an U12 boys’ team into a Leinster league for the first time in over a generation.

Hockey4All Summer Series & Fingal Ability Day
Skerries’ Hockey4All programme has now been running for four years, with a lively and enthusiastic group training every Sunday morning. This summer, the club — in partnership with Hockey Ireland and Fingal County Council — hosted a free, four-week Hockey4All Summer Series throughout August. It was a fun and inclusive introduction to hockey, open to all within the Fingal area.
Following on from this, several Skerries players and coaches volunteered at the Fingal Sport Ability Day on the Sport Ireland Campus, helping to run the hockey station and introduce new players to the sport.

Strengthening the Community Spirit
The club’s community focus doesn’t stop there. Throughout the year, Skerries Hockey has held several charity-led initiatives, including supporting Breast Cancer Awareness Month by wearing pink to training and fundraising for vital services.
They also launched their first ever Bring & Buy sale for second-hand hockey gear, with all proceeds donated to LauraLynn — Ireland’s Children’s Hospice.

Community Support & Gratitude
Skerries Hockey Club would like to acknowledge the invaluable support received from Fingal County Council, the Skerries Community Centre, Leinster Hockey and Hockey Ireland. Their help has played a huge role in enabling the club to deliver such positive and impactful initiatives over recent years.
