Men’s EY Qualifier: Clontarf, Portrane and Bray Earn Promotion

December 15, 2025

The Men’s EY Qualifier delivered a thrilling campaign that went right down to the final day, with Bray securing the third promotion spot in dramatic fashion. Alongside them, Clontarf and Portrane claimed the top two positions after outstanding campaigns, each recording eight wins from nine matches.

Saturday’s decisive fixtures saw Bray host Kilkenny knowing that only a win would secure third place and a first-ever promotion to the EY 2 League in the club’s history. Elsewhere, Portrane travelled to face Glenanne, while Clontarf took on Dublin University. Portrane continued their impressive form with a 5–2 victory, and Clontarf proved too strong for Dublin University, winning 5–1. With both teams finishing level on points, Portrane claimed first place on head to head, with Clontarf finishing second. Congratulations to both sides

In Bray, a large and passionate crowd gathered for a historic occasion, with the stakes clear—anything less than a win mean they would miss out on the final promotion place. Kilkenny dominated the first half and led 3–1 at the break, leaving Bray with a significant challenge. What followed was a remarkable second-half performance. Bray came out with renewed energy, attacking intent, and belief, producing a comeback that will live long in the club’s memory. A thrilling 5–4 victory sealed promotion, with both sides showcasing excellent hockey in a truly memorable contest.

Bray now join Portrane and Clontarf in securing promotion to the EY 2 League, bringing an end to an extremely competitive qualifier campaign. Railway Union, Glenanne, Kilkenny, UCD, and Dublin University all remained in contention deep into the season, while Weston and Rathgar also produced strong performances and will look to build further after the Christmas break.
