Leinster Inter-Pro Panels (U16/18) - 2021/22 Season

Leinster Inter-Pro Panels (U16/18) - 2021/22 Season

August 26, 2021

Leinster Hockey would like to acknowledge and thank the main sponsor for our Inter-Provincial Player development programmes, AerCap.  The funding being provided is being used to set up the regional development programmes across the province and we expect to see more talented players emerging from those programmes over the coming years.

Following a summer of development programmes being run across the province the Junior Age Group Inter-pro panels for 2021-22 season have now been selected and will start to prepare for a new competition format with matches being played on Sundays throughout the season.

In line with a wider Hockey Ireland High Performance strategy, extended panels of 24-28 players have been selected. This approach will help to ensure that a wider group of players are kept in a provincial development programme.  There is also capacity for additional players to be added to the panels during the season if appropriate.

Only 16 players will be selected for the inter-provincial competition matches (17 if there are 2 x GKs , each to play half a game).  It is expected that players will train with their junior clubs if not selected for a match.  Development matches will be arranged for the reserves during the season

On an inter-pro match weekend, players will typically play their club (or school) game on the Saturday as normal, their Inter-Provincial match on Sunday – with a mandatory rest day from all Hockey on the Monday.  This is in line with Hockey Ireland Player Welfare guidelines.

Note 1: Leinster South is a representative team for players playing their club hockey in Carlow, Kildare, Kilkenny, Laois, Offaly, Westmeath, Wexford and Wicklow.  Eligibility for Leinster South is determined in the first instance by a player’s club, and if not playing club hockey then by the player’s school

Note 2: There are a handful of players returning from injury who have yet to be assessed for some of the panels– a decision on whether or not to include them will be made by the end of August.
