Abbeyleix West Leinster Under 16 Hockey Tournament

Abbeyleix Junior Hockey Club will host the 5th Annual Abbeyleix Shield U16 
hockey tournament on Sunday 30th March in Kilkenny College. Abbeyleix compete in the West Leinster region at junior level against teams from Carlow, North Kildare, Naas, Tullamore and Newbridge. While the formal league takes place from Sept to March for u16s, the cup competition is a one day event and has grown greatly in popularity to become one of the highlights of the West Leinster calendar. Holders Kilkenny, who have participated each season so far, will start again as favourites and will be joined this year by Enniscorthy & Wexford from South East league. In all 8 teams will compete divided into two groups of 4, so each team will be guaranteed at least 3 matches. Matches will start at 10.00 am with final scheduled for 1.30pm followed by presentation of Abbeyleix Shield and medals. Catering provided by host Club Abbeyleix
West Leinster caters for all ages up to u-16s, and each club hosts a blitz at u10, u12
throughout the season as well as a number of friendly matches. U14s start season with an 8 a side league and then have a knockout Cup with full 11 a side, as well as a number of friendly matches in preparation. Abbeyleix will meet Carlow in this year’s final on 23rd March.
