Introducing the New District Cup

Introducing the New District Cup

July 03, 2026

Leinster Hockey is delighted to announce the launch of the new District Cup Competition as part of the Leinster Hockey Development Programme.

The tournament will take place on July 18th–19th, with a separate Finals Day scheduled for August 15th–16th. The introduction of the District Cup aims to provide players with additional development opportunities throughout the summer period, while also allowing them to continue representing their districts in a structured and competitive environment.

District Cup Format

The girls’ competition will feature 12 teams split into three groups of four, with each team playing three group-stage matches. The boys’ competition will feature six teams split into two groups of three.

Following the group stages, teams will progress into one of three competitions based on their finishing position:

  • Cup – Top 4 teams
  • Plate – Teams ranked 5th–8th
  • Bowl – Teams ranked 9th–12th

Each competition will include semi-finals, a final, and a 3rd/4th-place play-off. This structure guarantees every team multiple matches, ensuring plenty of playing time and competitive hockey for all participants. The knockout stages will then take place during a dedicated Finals Day in August.

The introduction of the District Cup further strengthens the Leinster Hockey Development Programme by creating additional opportunities for players to continue their development during the summer months, while also increasing competitive match exposure and contact time within the pathway.

Speaking on the launch of the new competition, Claire Byrne said:

“The District Cup is a new and exciting programme for our 2012 and 2013 players, starting this summer for the very first time.

The aim of the programme is to give players the opportunity to play matches and gain valuable experience. There is no selection process involved, meaning players can enjoy the games without pressure and learn in a safe, supportive environment.

As part of the programme, there will also be two big festival days, giving players even more opportunities to play, learn and enjoy the experience together.

I’m super excited for this programme to begin and hopeful that everyone will have a fantastic time while learning lots along the way!”

Everyone at Leinster Hockey is really looking forward to seeing the very first edition of the District Cup take place over the coming weeks.
