New Aerial Rule Change Now in Effect
January 09, 2026
Leinster Hockey can confirm that a new aerial rule change is now in effect across all competitions, in line with Hockey Ireland. This update follows a recent change to the International Hockey Federation (FIH) rulebook and applies immediately.
The updated rule is designed to improve player safety and clarity around aerial balls. It now states:
“Players must not approach within 5 metres of an opponent receiving a falling raised ball until it has been touched by the receiver. The ball may be intercepted within 5 metres, but outside of playing distance, provided it is done safely. The initial receiver has a right to the ball. If it is not clear which player is the initial receiver, the player of the team which raised the ball must allow the opponent to receive it.”
Hockey Ireland has confirmed that this rule will be implemented across all national competitions, and it is expected that all provinces, including Leinster, will follow the same approach.
To support players, coaches and umpires in understanding and applying the new rule, the Irish Hockey Umpires Association (IHUA) has provided a number of helpful resources:

We encourage all players, coaches and officials to take some time to familiarise themselves with the new rule and the available resources. We look forward to an exciting few weeks and months of hockey ahead.
